When we talk about Fintech Startups and Banks, a lot of things come to mind but not the word “partnership”. Fortunately, Tomas Hanacek from Zalep.to has a different opinion. I approach Tomas a few weeks back to talk about the Phoenix FinTech Conference in Prague and I was pleasantly surprised with his ideas on fintech, the banking industry and of course his amazing small fintech startup, Zalep.to.
Tomas, tell me a little about yourself and your career background
I have spent all my professional life in the finance filed. After graduation in banking, I had various jobs either in different banks or on investment firms. My last job was for one of the biggest Czech banks where I was responsible for the SME (small and medium sized enterprises) segment products. There, I witnessed the troubles that small companies are facing with financing because traditional banks cannot help them as effectively as they need and deserve. That’s how we came to start our small fintech called Zalep.to.
What’s one of the most valuable lessons you learnt so far in your career?
That if you do something alone, you will never achieve much. The most important factor are the people around you. Family, colleagues, friends. And the second most valuable lesson is that you never fail until you stop trying, as Albert Einstein wisely said.
Do you think disruption in Banks is here to stay? How can fintech start-ups and banks cooperate in a better way?
There will always be changes and innovation in whatever humans do. These changes are much faster now than ever before. Banks and fintech start-ups need to find a better way to cooperate, how to live in symbiosis and how to complement each other- at least for Czech Republic. I believe that this is the only way both sides can benefit from the advantages each of them have.
What are your expectations for PHOENIX? Why would you recommend it to your peers?
I’m very much looking forward to it. I hope to meet inspiring people from the financial world, get knowledge, exchange experiences and see new trends and ideas that I can apply in my day-to-day work.
Can you give us a sneak peek of your presentation? How will our attendees benefit from it?
Well, it is not ready yet … 🙂 but I will speak about the main differences between the corporate world and a small fintech company. How big banks look at small start-ups and vice versa and why does the corporate world seem to lack openness towards young people and small companies.
